SAN FRANCISCO – Cowboys coach Jason Garrett has raved about the team’s leadership throughout the offseason and into training camp.

He sees veterans teaching younger players the right way to work. He sees younger players growing into more vocal roles.

So when Garrett tabbed the captains for Monday’s preseason opener at Oakland, it was no surprise when he looked to Tony Romo, Jason Witten and DeMarcus Ware. Nor was it a surprise that he elected Danny McCray as the special teams captain after McCray has led that unit in tackles the last two seasons.

The biggest no-brainer might have been Sean Lee.

“There are a lot of good players on this defense and it’s an honor to be out there representing the defense,” Lee said. “We’ve got guys like Jay Ratliff and a few guys not playing that could fill that spot, so it’s definitely an honor.”

The players vote for team captains before the Sept. 5 season opener against the New York Giants. It would be a shock if Lee is not elected.
