Miles Austin steps up rehab work
OXNARD, Calif. – Wide receiver Miles Austin will do on-field resistance training for the first time since straining a hamstring in the first week of training camp.
Austin will not practice this week but he was on the field for Wednesday’s morning walkthrough. Coach Jason Garrett hopes Austin will be able to play Aug. 25 vs. St. Louis, along with Anthony Spencer and Jason Hatcher, who are coming back from hamstring injuries as well.
“He’s made some progress,” Garrett said. “He did some striders (Tuesday), was out there on the walkthrough. He’s inching along, but we’ve got to make sure all of those guys are right before we force them back into practice prematurely.”
Austin missed six games last year with hamstring injuries in both legs. The Cowboys are being cautious with his return. Garret said Austin got off to a great start in training camp before the injury and believes the time off might help the receiver when the season starts.
“It’s not a rationalization but with specific guys you fall into that category with them and always guarding them against themselves,” Garrett said. “Make sure they’re not overworked because they do everything. They want every rep: ‘I’ve got to get that rep, coach. I’ve got to go 100 mph.’ That’s what you want for your football team, but you’ve got to spin that around.”
