Jerry Jones expects Tony Romo to play 10-12 snaps
Not even in hindsight after Jason Witten suffered a lacerated spleen that put his status for the season opener in jeopardy. Witten was injured during the offense’s sixth overall snap, which occurred on the first play of their second possession.
“That’s second guessing,” Jones said. “He certainly went one play too long, from that standpoint, if you looked at it that way. But I don’t at all second-guess that.”
However, Jones wants coach Jason Garrett to exercise caution in Saturday’s preseason game against the San Diego Chargers.
Quarterback Tony Romo and the other skill players need work, but the risk must be managed with the Cowboys operating with a patchwork offensive line. Center Phil Costa (back) and left guard Nate Livings (hamstring) are expected to be sidelined again.
“We do about what we did last week and get about 10 or 12 snaps and try to make that do,” Jones said. “That’s what you do.”
