Tropical storm could delay Mike Jenkins' doctor visit
With the final cuts looming this week, Jenkins most likely will visit Andrews again in Pensacola, Fla. However, Tropical Storm Isaac swept through parts of Florida on Sunday and could prevent a visit, at least in the early part of the week.
Jenkins has range of motion in his shoulder but not enough strength, which is preventing him from getting cleared for contact practices. He is currently on the physically unable to perform list and if he remains there at the start of the season, he'll miss the first six weeks of the regular season.
Jenkins won't count against the 53-man roster.
"Not scheduled right now," Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said regarding Jenkins' availability to visit Andrews. "But I think it's going to be sooner rather than later. He's going to get an opinion from Dr. Andrews and then we'll take a look at it at that time."
If and when Andrews clears Jenkins, the Cowboys' doctors will do another examination.
Jones said Jenkins has a secure roster spot but the issue is how many cornerbacks to keep, especially healthy ones. Brandon Carr, Morris Claiborne and Orlando Scandrick are locks to make the final roster.
Mario Butler and C.J. Wilson have been the most impressive among the backups. Teddy Williams and Akwasi Owusu-Ansah are fighting for a roster spot, too.
The Cowboys could go with six cornerbacks on the roster with Jenkins out until he gets cleared for contact.
Jones didn't think Jenkins' health status hampers his roster decisions at cornerback.
"No, not at all," Jones said. "We've got a roster spot for him, so we're not necessarily in that spot at all."
