IRVING, Texas -- With the Cowboys releasing eight players on Monday morning, the name Raymond Radway stuck out the most.
Radway was a wide receiver who made the team in 2011, but a fractured leg in the final preseason game at Miami ended his season. It set the speedy Radway back in his development, and he might have lost some speed because of the leg injury.
Radway was inconsistent in this summer's practices, dropping passes, lining up the wrong way and not getting open enough. The McKinney North product still flashed that dazzling speed of his, blowing by cornerback Morris Claiborne on a deep route during training camp.
But one thing coach Jason Garrett preaches to his team is consistency. If players are consistent, they'll play.
"Ray has done a good job for us," Garrett said Monday. "He had a particularly good preseason last year and he got hurt. When he came back, you have to start with a clean slate and over the course of the offseason and training camp we just felt like some of the other guys were ahead of him. I believe he can play in this league and he just needs to be a consistent performer, both in practices and in preseason games. We like what he's all about, physically we like what he's about, mentally we feel like some other guys were ahead of him and we had to make that decision for our team."
The injury Radway sustained, normally takes a player at least a year to fully recover from and regain his previous speed. Radway said during camp he felt fine and was regaining his speed.
"I know when you have an injury like he's had it takes a little time to come back from," Garrett said. "In often times, people say it's not necessarily the first year back but it's the second year when you start feeling like yourself again. He's going to play in this league. Right now we felt like we had to make that decisions and its the best thing for our team."
