Colin Cochart hopes to be insurance policy
Even as the news of Jason Witten's availability to play against the New York Giants on Wednesday seems to improve on a daily basis, Cochart has to be prepared to some degree if Witten is not cleared medically.
Cochart arrived at 8 p.m. Saturday and slept for only five hours after receiving his iPad playbook.
“Mostly I’m just trying to learn the formations and the shifts and the different route combinations,” Cochart said. “I came from Cincinnati, which (runs) West Coast and uses all terminology and coming here it’s a numbers scheme. It’s a little different but Nate Livings came here from Cincinnati last year and he said it’s fairly easy to pick up, so I’ll just take that little advice from him and hope I can get it down pat in the next couple of days.”
If Witten cannot play, the Cowboys would likely have to limit the special teams work of John Phillips and James Hanna. Cochart played on all four special teams units for the Bengals.
“That’s what a guy like me does,” Cochart said. “I come in here and I work on special teams, contribute on offense and just try to do everything they ask me to.”
