Barry Church anxious for first real start

IRVING, Texas – Barry Church will make the second start of his career on Wednesday against the New York Giants, but the circumstances are a lot different.

On Dec. 11, Church started as the Cowboys opened up in a sub-package defense. On Wednesday, he will be the Cowboys’ starting strong safety.

“That was just a package I was in, but, man, words can’t even describe it,” Church said. “I’m really looking forward to this opportunity to show people what I can do and look forward to what our defense has got because we’re looking good in practice.”

Church won the starter’s job a few days into camp and has not looked back since. He just hopes this start does not end like the first New York start when he suffered a shoulder injury that eventually landed him on injured reserve.

“Before every game I get butterflies, but once I get that first hit I’m cool after that,” Church said.

Wouldn’t the pregame nerves be a little bigger this time?

“Pterodactyl like out there opening up in New York,” Church said, “but I’ll be all right.”
