New punter Brian Moorman is ready to go
After signing with the Bills as an undrafted free agent in 2001, it's been a while since Moorman had to work out for a team. Moorman performed better in a tryout at Cowboys Stadium over Ryan Donahue, a former punter from the Detroit Lions.
Moorman's time with the Cowboys could be short. Punter Chris Jones suffered a sprained left (kicking) knee and hopes to return in two weeks.
"It’s a little different, but right back at it," Moorman said. "I’m happy to be part of this organization and glad for the opportunity to continue my career and hopefully I can come in and do what they need me to do to help the team."
Moorman said he was surprised to get released by the Bills, but he struggled during the first three weeks of the season. Moorman had a net average of 32.7, ranking 30th among 31 punters. Of those punters, Moorman led the NFL with 172 return yards allowed.
Coach Jason Garrett said Moorman's season didn't deter the organization from making a move on Moorman because he's a two-time Pro Bowler and has a track record in the league.
"Anybody’s surprised when they get cut," Moorman said. "Obviously I’d been there a long time. It is what it is. It’s time to just move on to a new chapter. I’m excited to be part of such a storied franchise whether it’s a short time or a long time. Like I said, I’m here to hopefully do as good as Chris has done over these last few weeks. He’s done a great job. I hope to continue that for the team."
Moorman will also take over the holder's duties for Jones.
