IRVING, Texas – There has been pressure on Tony Romo since the day he became the Cowboys starting quarterback in 2006. There is even more pressure on him now because of how much he has to do for the Cowboys to win games.

“He understands the old expression, ‘It comes with the dinner,’” coach Jason Garrett said. “He understands it’s part of the job. It’s not always going to be clean. We talk all the time as quarterbacks, if you drop back 10 times in the pocket you’re probably going to be clean one or two times. You have to move. You have to find soft places in the pocket to throw. You have to find a vision or a lane to throw the ball through. It’s never really easy. That’s the nature of that position.”

The Cowboys’ offensive line is battling injury and ineffective play as they prepare for Washington on Thursday. Tyron Smith’s availability is in question because of an ankle sprain, which would lead to Jermey Parnell’s first career start. Mackenzy Bernadeau will make his second start at center with Ryan Cook not expected to play. Doug Free struggled badly vs. Cleveland on Sunday.

Romo, who was sacked a career-high seven times against Cleveland, was not made available to the local media this week.

He has gone a season-high three straight games without an interception, but Garrett wants to make sure Romo doesn’t try to do too much..

“You got to be careful about saying I’m going to lean on Tony and let him kind of go save the day,” Garrett said. “It’s too challenging of a position to do that. And Tony’s certainly made a number of plays for us through the years where he’s kind of made up for maybe a free rusher or something in the pocket because he does have those abilities.”
