ARLINGTON, Texas -- Cowboys linebacker Bruce Carter suffered a left elbow injury on a fourth-quarter tackle and will not return, which is bad news for a defense that has been depleted.

The Cowboys lost cornerback Orlando Scandrick in the second quarter to a broken left hand, according to a source. They are also playing without nose tackle Jay Ratliff because of a groin injury.

With Carter out, the Cowboys are without their two starting inside linebackers at the beginning of the season. Sean Lee is out for the year because of toe surgery.

Ernie Sims, who was not with the Cowboys at the start of the year, took over for Carter. Dan Connor is the other starting inside linebacker. Alex Albright is the backup.

Carter was wobbly as he left the field and needed extra help from the medical staff to get of the field.
