OXNARD, Calif. – The Cowboys got back to their River Ridge Residence Inn complex at 5 a.m. Monday after returning from Canton, Ohio, and the players were off. Preseason game No. 2 comes Friday at Oakland.
That is a quick turnaround.
“The nature of this league and really the nature of this franchise is we play a lot of funny schedules,” coach Jason Garrett said. “We play Monday nights. We play Thursday. We play a lot of different games throughout the year at different times. What we talk about is controlling what we can control.
“We need this day. Today is an important day, get your mind right and let’s practice well. It’ll be a quick turnaround. We’ll have a little preparation for Oakland tomorrow and be on a plane Thursday. I think you test your resourcefulness and mental toughness as a team. You see a lot about players, players you might be counting on. Can they handle this kind of thing?”
Players will be in pads for today’s practice and are scheduled to be in pads again Wednesday. The Cowboys have yet to have a practice without pads since arriving in Oxnard, Calif.
When I brought up the pads question, Garrett had a little fun with me.
“You’re like a player,” Garrett said. “How about next Thursday, are we going to be in pads? Focus on the task at hand, Archer.”
