Cowboys work out six players

IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys worked out six players on Tuesday at Valley Ranch, signing one to the practice squad.

Cornerbacks Ryan Steed, Junior Mertile, Peyton Thompson, defensive tackle David Carter and wide receivers Jamar Newsome and Dwight Jones worked out.

Only Newsome, who was on the Kansas City Chiefs roster at the end of the 2012 season, was signed to the practice squad. He played in two games last season catching five passes for 73 yards. He also played in two games for Jacksonville in 2011.

Steed, Mertile and Thompson were on training camp rosters before getting released in August.

The Cowboys have just four corners on the roster and with starter Morris Claiborne bothered by a left shoulder injury, the team could add someone if things do not improve from a health standpoint.
Calvin Watkins joined in September 2009. He's covered the Cowboys since 2006 and also has covered colleges, boxing and high school sports.
