Brian Waters focused on now, not future

October, 25, 2013
IRVING, Texas -- On Tuesday, I wondered if Brian Waters wanted to play again in 2014. He wonders the same thing.

“I think about the future all the time, but I think about it as little as I possibly can,” Waters said. “I try to put my effort in the present right now. Obviously I’ve taken my time to think about those things, but once I committed to playing football this year I knew I had some things I had to deal with.”

Waters did not play last season and did not sign with the Cowboys until Sept. 4 after a summer-long fling. He is on a one-year deal that could pay him up to $3 million and has started since Week 3 at right guard.

“You have to constantly remind yourself of the fact of how miserable it was to not be out here,” Waters said of his year away from the game. “So for me personally, it was bad. I say bad, but it was one of those things where I definitely missed the game. So I’m enjoying it and really appreciate being here and taking full advantage of it, man, because I have no idea how long I’m going to play.”

He turns 37 next February.

“I’m enjoying it, I really am,” Waters said. “There’s some tough days, but I’m enjoying it. The tough days would come if I was 25, so it really doesn’t make a difference. But I’m enjoying being here and I’m really enjoying the guys I’m playing with. That’s the biggest plus for me.”
