The quarterback was able to find a cold tub for some treatment after the game for his surgically-repaired back.
Romo spends extra time before and after practices treating his back or doing extra strengthening exercises. After getting sacked three times and hit once more, Romo was glad to spend some time in the cold tub, which was not part of his protocol after games before the most recent back surgery.
“If I can find ice,” Romo said when asked if he will continue those treatments during the regular season.
Romo was sacked on a hit from behind by Dolphins defensive end Olivier Vernon on the Cowboys’ second series. He was sacked by Cameron Wake on two of the next three series and took a hit on a third-down throw on the series in between.
“In a funny kind of way, that was good for him to be able to feel that contact and know that it’s like the contact he’s been feeling his whole life, playing as an NFL quarterback,” coach Jason Garrett said. “I thought for the most part, you want to protect better than that. I felt like they were around him a little too much and we’ll try to look at the tape and figure out what that is, but he had to move in the pocket. He did get hit a couple times, and that’s what happens in real, live games. I thought he handled that well and bounced right back up.”
Romo said he felt fine after the hits. He was sacked more than three times in a game just twice in 2013. He finished Saturday with 87 yards on 10-of-18 passing in the first half.
“I took some hits; that was good just in regard to getting up and keep playing,” Romo said. “That part of it was positive. The hits in general, hopefully we can avoid, but it was good to get back up and keep going and see how I felt and go play football.”
Romo played in 46 snaps in the preseason. He completed 4 of 5 passes for 80 yards in his first game last week against the Baltimore Ravens. He will likely sit out Thursday’s game against the Denver Broncos, as Garrett typically rests his starters in the preseason finale.
“It was good to kind of play a half and get in that mode and work out some of the road communication things that came up tonight,” Romo said. “I think it’s important to do. Some stuff came up that we’ve got to do a better job. It starts with myself, so we’ll get that right.”
