IRVING, Texas -- DeMarco Murray got to know the Cowboys a little bit at the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis and even better during a visit to Valley Ranch earlier this month.
Little did he know the Cowboys were using Barry Switzer, the former Sooner and Cowboys coach, as a resource about the Oklahoma running back, whom they selected in the third round Friday with the 71st overall pick.
“He’s definitely a legend around there,” Murray said. “He would be around the practice field and I’d pick his brain a little bit about past running backs, and after te visit here I went an met with Coach Switzer and talked to him about it.”
Murray’s family is filled with Cowboys fans. Growing up in Las Vegas, he knew St. Louis running back Steven Jackson, who has given Murray some advice over the years. Jackson also grew up a Cowboys fan and was crushed when the Cowboys passed on him in 2004.
“I think he still does [root for the Cowboys],” Murray said.
