Chargers dominate in December
By Tim MacMahon
IRVING, Texas -- Head coach Wade Phillips has referred to the Dallas Cowboys' record in recent December as an example of "baseball stats."
Phillips doesn't see a great significance in the San Diego Chargers' recent December success, either. The Chargers are 10-0 in December games under Norv Turner. As Phillips pointed out, their December winning streak dates to his last season as the Chargers' defensive coordinator, when San Diego went 5-0 in December.
"They have a very good football team," Phillips said when asked of the Chargers' December domination. "They have good players and they play well."
Phillips considers the Cowboys "a bunch of winners," too. But Dallas is 3-6 in December games under Phillips.
The December trends have continued into the playoffs for both teams. The Chargers are 4-2 in the postseason under Turner, who was the other finalist to replace Bill Parcells at Valley Ranch. The Cowboys lost their only playoff game so far under Phillips.
Phillips (30-14) has a better regular-season record in Dallas than Turner (28-16) does in San Diego. But the Chargers have won more than the Cowboys when it really matters, a trend the home team needs to reverse Sunday.
