Jerry Jones will speak for the people

By Calvin Watkins

When Emmitt Smith gets inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will give the introduction speech.

It's the second time, Jones will intro a player, he did Michael Irvin's a few years ago.

"When I think of it, I think of his contribution," Jones said of Smith. "I think of what he is individually and I think what he means to our fans and I will stand there as a representative of every constituency and I'm honored to do it."

For Jones, it takes this personally and knows its a special day for not only the player, but for himself as well.

"This is very special," Jones said. "His induction, and it is really a feel good and it really is an honor on behalf of everybody. His teammates and fans and everybody to be apart of it like that it will be a very special time for the franchise."

One of the things, Jones did after Smith was elected for the hall, was contact the NFL about getting the Cowboys in the Hall of Fame game on Aug. 8 in Canton, Ohio. Jones has an opportunity to cash in on Smith's induction and move training camp to Oxnard, Calif. after the Hall of Fame game.

In essence, Jones can open training camp twice.

In late July in San Antonio and again in Oxnard.

"We lobbied hard when he was voted in," Jones said of Smith. "We lobbied hard to get that game, we wanted that game for that very reason."
