Cowboys practice report: Day 10

By Calvin Watkins

OXNARD, Calif. -- The Cowboys worked in helmets and shoulder pads again Wednesday. Most of the practice was devoted to what the Houston Texans, Saturday's fourth preseason opponent, do.

Here are the highlights.

*One new injury to report is linebacker Leon Williams, who missed practice with a cauliflower ear. He should return Thursday. How he got it is a mystery. Wide receiver Kevin Ogletree also missed practice with a strained hamstring. Coach Wade Phillips expected him to return for Thursday's practice. The missing were Kyle Kosier (knee), Marc Colombo (knee), Dez Bryant (ankle), John Phillips (knee), Gerald Sensabaugh (shoulder), Keith Brooking (shoulder), Stephen Hodge (knee) and Marcus Spears (knee). Jerry Jones said Sensabaugh is progressing quicker than expected and is getting a range of motion. Jones also said he's hopeful Colombo will return for the season opener.

*Kicker David Buehler went 6-of-6 on field goal tries. Buehler attempted his kicks into the wind. The estimated distances are 25, 30, 35, 39, 42 and 44 yards.

*Wade Phillips is making it mandatory for the offensive and defensive linemen to wear knee braces. When Bill Parcells was the coach it was mandatory, but when Phillips took over it was relaxed. The recent injuries to Colombo and Kosier raised concerns about whether or not a knee brace can help curtail injuries from happening. Colombo was hurt as he wore a knee brace.

*Stephen McGee ran the scout team offense vs. the first-team defense. McGee, whenever he faces the first team, is always under pressure. McGee made some good throws under pressure and moved well in the pocket. He avoided a sack to complete a pass to Scott Sicko. Following practice, Tony Romo and Jon Kitna helped McGee on his pocket presence.

*Alex Barron started with the first team at right tackle while Robert Brewster worked with the second team at left tackle. Barron, who is returning full time to practice after a sprained ankle, received most of the reps with the first team.

*Among the defensive backs, Cletis Gordon almost had two interceptions. He mistimed a jump on a sideline pass on one play. Orlando Scandrick jumped the route of a McGee pass and snagged an interception. Terence Newman was beat on a play by Terrell Hudgins, but he grabbed his jersey to slow him up.

*In the hurry-up offense, Romo misfired on two strong throws, slants, to Roy Williams and Patrick Crayton in the end zone. But he did find Williams on a slant for a touchdown. Kitna was almost picked off in the end zone, but Barry Church dropped the interception.

*Martellus Bennett did a nice job of beating his defender and catching a back-shoulder fade pass from Kitna.

*Bradie James made a nice read on a pass from McGee, who tried to fire one to Martin Rucker. James almost had an interception.
