Chris Gronkowski sits with strained groin

By Tim MacMahon

IRVING, Texas -- The Cowboys aren’t completely healthy after all.

Fullback Chris Gronkowski sat out Thursday’s practice with a Grade 1 groin strain. Coach Wade Phillips isn’t sure whether Gronkowski, an undrafted rookie who is the only fullback on the roster, will be ready to practice Friday or play Sunday against the Titans.

“He said a week or so ago it bothered him some,” Phillips said. “It bothered him a little bit yesterday, but he practiced. This morning, it was hurting him more, so we pulled back on it.”

The Cowboys signed fullback Alex Daniels to the practice squad this week, but Phillips said activating him isn’t an option. He’s a developmental project who played defensive end until being moved to fullback during training camp with the Oakland Raiders.

If Gronkowski can’t play, the Cowboys will utilize their two- and three-tight end packages more often. Third tight end Scott Chandler, who was promoted from the practice squad before the last game, is capable of playing as an H-back, as is Jason Witten.
