Marc Colombo vs. Clay Matthews? Ouch
By Tim MacMahon
IRVING, Texas -- An achy back caused right tackle Marc Colombo to miss Wednesday’s practice.
He’s expected to practice Thursday and play Sunday, but the Cowboys better be prepared to give Colombo help against the Packers. He’ll be matched up against outside linebacker Clay Matthews, who leads the NFL with 9.5 sacks.
Wade Phillips said Colombo’s back has been bothering him. His knees will give him trouble the rest of his career. That’s part of the reason why he struggles against pure speed rushers.
It might help Colombo, who has allowed three sacks and committed three false starts in six games, if the Cowboys try to establish the run to the right side early in the game. Give him a chance to pound on Matthews. Make the smaller player fight off blocks and try to make tackles.
If Matthews doesn’t have to worry about the running game, he won’t have much trouble blowing by Colombo and putting Jon Kitna on his back.
