Jerry Jones: David Buehler not going anywhere

By Calvin Watkins

IRVING, Texas -- When kicker Dan Bailey made a franchise rookie record six field goals in the Cowboys' victory over the Washington Redskins on Monday, it created a buzz questioning the need for David Buehler.

Buehler, who struggled at field goals last season by converting 75 percent, is mainly a kickoff specialist and has 56 touchbacks in his career.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Wednesday on KRLD-FM, however, that Buehler will remain with the team. The kicker missed the Redskins game and will most likely not participate against the Detroit Lions on Sunday as he recovers from a groin injury.

"We want David Buehler to get well," Jones said. "He will need the bye to really get well, I think. We need that kickoff deep in that end zone. That touchback is an important part of the game."

Buehler has five touchbacks out of 10 kickoffs this season but hasn't attempted any field goals. He is the long field-goal kicker, although Bailey has attempted all the kicks this season. The longest kick Bailey's made this year was from 48 yards -- the tying score in the Week 2 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

"Buehler is too big of an asset for us not to count on him the rest of the year," Jones said.
