Garrett: Calvin Johnson arguably NFL's best player

By Tim MacMahon

IRVING, Texas -- There’s a feeling in Detroit that Calvin Johnson doesn’t get enough respect.

That’s fueled in part by ESPN analyst Cris Carter’s preseason statement that Johnson isn’t one of the NFL’s elite receivers.

Well, the man known as "Megatron" gets plenty of respect around these parts. The Cowboys almost sound as if they’re in awe of the freakish physical specimen who has two touchdown catches in each game this season.

“Calvin Johnson is arguably the best player in the National Football League,” coach Jason Garrett said. “He’s bigger than everybody else. He jumps up and catches the ball over his head. He runs with it after the catch. He does all the big things and little things well. It will be a tremendous challenge.”

There aren’t many receivers who stand 6-foot-5 and weigh 236 pounds. There aren’t many receivers who run 4.35 40-yard dashes and have 43-inch vertical jumps. Johnson is the only one who has that combination of size, speed and leaping ability, plus excellent hands and an amazing ability to adjust to the ball in the air.

“Calvin is just in a league of his own with what he does,” safety Gerald Sensabaugh said.
