A quick primer on the NFC East race
By Tim MacMahon
Two weeks to go, and the NFC East race is still anybody’s to win. Well, anybody’s but the Redskins.
The 8-6 Cowboys are in the driver’s seat. They’re the only team that can clinch an NFC East crown this weekend. They’re also the only contender in the division that can’t be eliminated this weekend.
The Cowboys can clinch on Christmas Eve by beating the Eagles if the Giants lose to the Jets. If the Giants beat the Jets, the Cowboys would have to win at the Meadowlands on New Year’s Eve no matter what.
The Giants can win the division by winning their final two games or by beating the Cowboys in Week 17 if the Eagles lose one of their last two games.
The left-for-dead, all-hype Eagles somehow still have a chance, but they need to win the next two weeks against the Cowboys and Redskins and get some help. Philadelphia needs the Giants to lose to the Jets and beat the Cowboys. The Eagles would have the tiebreaker (best division record) if the East’s top three teams all finish at 8-8.
