Report: Carl Nicks wants to stay in New Orleans
By Calvin Watkins
A potential target for the Cowboys in free agency, when it starts March 13, is New Orleans Saints guard Carl Nicks.
Nicks would be an upgrade from the guards the Cowboys employed in 2011, yet there is still value in keeping veteran right guard Kyle Kosier and developing younger linemen Bill Nagy, Kevin Kowalski and David Arkin. Derrick Dockery and Montrae Holland, who also played some guard are free agents.
On Wednesday, Nicks told Mike Triplette of the New Orleans Times-Picayune he wants to remain with the Saints.
"#Saints G Carl Nick said hed love to stay in New Orleans and team said theyll try to keep him. But he knows Saints have a lot of FAs to sign," is what Triplette reported on Twitter.
The Saints have to re-sign quarterback Drew Brees and wide receiver Marques Colston. Where Nicks falls in the pecking order of the Saints front office, most likely after Brees, is uncertain.
The Cowboys will have the cap space, currently $12.5 million, to go after some free agents, and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he expects to use some of it. The cap space could increase with the restructuring of contracts and cutting of several players to as much as $20 million.
