Matt Johnson trying to make plays
By Calvin Watkins
IRVING, Texas -- Cowboys fourth-round pick Matt Johnson made plays on the ball in college. That's why he finished his career at Eastern Washington with 17 interceptions.
During minicamp at Valley Ranch this weekend, Johnson picked off a pass thrown by rookie Larry Smith.
"They just said make plays," Johnson said of what the coaches told him.
The Cowboys' safety play has been inconsistent the last few years, and despite signing Brodney Pool to a one-year deal, Johnson was selected to add depth and a possible playmaker to the defense and special teams units.
"I'm just going to do my best," Johnson said. "I know I have to contribute on special teams and make plays. Coaches said if I make plays the coaches said I can get on the field [on defense]."
