Pondering the 46-man roster: Injuries make it easy
By Todd Archer
IRVING, Texas – In a perfect world, Jason Garrett would be able to roll out the same 46-man roster every week but injuries have prevented that so far.
The Cowboys have ruled out five players for tonight’s game vs. Chicago: linebacker Alex Albright (neck), defensive end Kenyon Coleman (knee), center Phil Costa (back), safety Matt Johnson (hamstring, back) and nose tackle Jay Ratliff (ankle).
For some reason, punter Chris Jones is listed as doubtful with his knee injury even though the team signed Brian Moorman. I can’t foresee Jones serving only as Dan Bailey’s holder, so he would be the sixth inactive player.
Linebacker Anthony Spencer is questionable with a pectoral injury, but he has said he would play against the Bears. Of course, that came before he didn’t practice all week. Spencer’s absence would give Victor Butler the start and make rookie Kyle Wilber the only backup outside linebacker.
Let’s say Spencer plays, which would mean the final inactive player would likely be wide receiver Cole Beasley, who has not dressed the last two games. The Cowboys will go with eight offensive linemen until Costa is healthy. They are banged up along the defensive line and they need all of their defensive backs.
