Pondering the 46: How to make the final two cuts
By Todd Archer
IRVING, Texas – For a few weeks it was pretty easy to guess at the Cowboys’ inactive list, but this week at Philadelphia there are some questions as we ponder the 46-man roster against the Eagles.
Look for running back DeMarco Murray, Sean Lissemore, Phil Costa, Matt Johnson and Dan Connor to be five of the inactive players, leaving two spots to fill.
The Cowboys signed Gary Guyton to replace Orie Lemon (hamstring) on the 53-man roster and provide depth at inside linebacker. If he doesn’t play, then Alex Albright is the only backup at inside linebacker. That might be a chance the Cowboys are willing to take against the Eagles.
Andre Holmes has been inactive the last few games and does not appear to have a role on the offense with Cole Beasley and Dwayne Harris getting more looks. He can do more things on special teams and could help ease the loss of Lemon there.
Here’s an interesting case: fullback Lawrence Vickers. The Cowboys are having difficulties moving the ball on the ground and Vickers has only one special teams’ stop. Can they get away going without a true fullback on the gameday roster? It’s tricky, for sure, but possible.
Other possibilities: safety Charlie Peprah, who hasn’t played yet, and linebacker Kyle Wilber.
Just a guess, but I’d go with Guyton and Holmes as the final two inactive players.
