Monte Kiffin: 'It's about players'

By Todd Archer

IRVING, Texas – It didn’t take long to hear Monte Kiffin’s voice at the Cowboys’ rookie mini-camp on Friday.

After each play the Cowboys’ new defensive coordinator kept imploring the players to “finish, finish, finish.”

The Cowboys did not go after high-priced free agents to boost the defense in part because they couldn’t but also because they believe Kiffin will be the biggest difference maker, not the two veteran defenders in linebacker Justin Durant and safety Will Allen they added on short-term deals.

Kiffin laughed at the notion.

“I’ll take help any way we can get it,” Kiffin said. “It’s about players.”

Friday was Kiffin’s first NFL practice since 2008, having spent the last four seasons at Tennessee and Southern Cal with his son, Lane. He has had limited contact with the veterans, but that will pick up in two weeks when the organized team activities begin.

“I know one thing, guys will be back (in the afternoon) and they don’t have to go back to class,” Kiffin said. “That’s the way I like it. It’s important to go to class, but we get back (in the afternoon) and have meetings and away we go.”
