W2W4: The Blue and White Scrimmage
By Calvin Watkins
OXNARD, Calif. -- The Cowboys will play in their annual Blue and White scrimmage Sunday. Here are a few things to watch for:
Will Dez Bryant participate? Bryant missed Saturday's practice and did limited work in the morning walk-through with a sore hip. Bryant said he was OK as he walked off the field on Saturday, and Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones wasn't sure if the receiver would participate in the scrimmage. His status is uncertain, but with this being a scrimmage mainly for the younger players, he might not participate.
What to expect: The early portions of Sunday's scrimmage are more like a practice for veteran players, so a few might get a day off. But the back end of the practice will turn into a scrimmage for the younger players like B.W. Webb, Caleb McSurdy, Monte Taylor, Terrance Williams, Jared Green and Joseph Randle. The offense will be given a chance to move the ball down the field as in normal game conditions. There will be some hitting, but nobody will be taken to the ground.
Matchups: Nate Livings is the starting left guard, and we'll see how he fares against defensive tackles Jason Hatcher and Sean Lissemore in practice. Livings has gotten better as he returns from his foot injury. Eric Rogers, Tim Benford, Green and Williams against any of the defensive backs is another thing to keep an eye on. The battles between the corners and receivers are fun to watch. The Cowboys might keep three quarterbacks, and if that's the case, Nick Stephens and Alex Tanney will be competing for that third spot. Randle will get his most carries in this camp with the younger players taking over. He's a little rusty at times, but you can tell he's a talented player.
Who will not work: Cole Beasley (knee), Ronald Leary (calf), Mackenzy Bernadeau (hamstring), Jermey Parnell (hamstring), Danny Coale (knee), James Hanna (hanmstring), LP Ladouceur (calf), Ike Igbinosun (leg), Ben Bass (ankle) and Jay Ratliff (hamstring) are out. Beasley could return but he missed Saturday's practice wearing a sleeve on his knee.
