Jason Garrett's rookie rundown
By Tim MacMahon
Jason Garrett was asked a routine question about the Cowboys’ rookie class Tuesday and proceeded to discuss in some detail his evaluation to this point of every 2013 Dallas draft pick.
Well, with one exception.
Garrett’s rookie rundown:
First-round center Travis Frederick: “Travis Frederick has been essentially the starting center for us since the first snap of the first OTA. I think he’s handled it really well. He has a chance to be a really good football player. He’s still learning a lot technically about what we’re asking him to do and what the defenses are showing him, but he brings it every day. He’s the right kind of guy. He’s smart. He’s tough. He wants to get better every day.”
Jean-Jacques Taylor joins Galloway and Company live from Oxnard, Calif., to discuss the latest news from Cowboys training camp.
Second-round tight end Gavin Escobar: “Escobar is growing before our eyes. Again, a long way off, but you can see him gaining confidence, playing faster, playing with some snap and decisiveness. He’s a natural pass catcher. He’s learning how to block. He has to get stronger. We know that, but he’s showing some versatility, playing a lot of different spots.”
Third-round receiver Terrance Williams: “Terrance Williams is again growing before our eyes. I keep using this word confidence, but you see these guys gaining confidence. They’ve seen it in the installation during the spring, they’ve seen it again in the minicamp, now they’ve seen it again for the third time. It’s starting to sink in with them. They’ve been in these situations before, and you start to see them take advantage of them.”
Third-round safety J.J. Wilcox: “Wilcox, we’ve talked about a lot. We like the demeanor that he plays with. He’s learning the defensive system. I think he’s getting better at understanding what his landmarks are, what his assignments are, but he’s bringing it every day. He’s got a physical nature that we really, really like.”
Fourth-round cornerback B.W. Webb: “Webb I think is really improving as well. He made a big play in the scrimmage the other day, an interception and returned it in one of those late, end-of-game situations. Again, same kind of a process they’re going through. Sometimes they’re here and it’s like, ‘Ah, where’s their quickness? Where’s his explosiveness?’ But I think it has a lot to do with understanding what we’re asking him to do and playing with confidence.”
Sixth-round linebacker DeVonte Holloman: “Holloman is a guy who what we saw on tape in college is what we’re beginning to see here on the practice field. Athletic guy, rangy guy, can really run to the football, has a nose for the football. He’s learning. I think he’s getting better every day. The approach of these guys is really, really good. They want to get better. They want to make this football team. They want to have a role on this football team.”
Garrett forgot about fifth-round running back Joseph Randle, who is fourth on the depth chart at the moment, making him the least likely rookie to be active on game days at this point.
