Jason Witten won't count out Tony Romo

By Todd Archer

IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten has seen Tony Romo play through a broken rib and punctured lung, a bad knee and even a bruised back.

Witten is not ready to give up on Romo's playing Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles even if the quarterback has missed the last two days of practice with a bad back.

“I wouldn’t count him out until he’s out,” Witten said. “There’s no question. That wouldn’t surprise me, but I do think obviously this is different situation (it) seems like with the back and however that plays out. But you’ve got to prepare with Kyle (Orton) and go as if that’s the case and then see how it plays out.”

Witten said he was not aware how hurt Romo was until the plane ride home from the 24-23 win against the Washington Redskins.

“I think we’ve gotten used to him kind of limping around and finding a way and somehow, some way, Wednesday rolls around and he’s back out there,” Witten said. “I think we all believed that would be the case. Obviously that was tough not to have him out there on Wednesday, but you have hope in that and see the way it plays out. Obviously for him and I, everything you’ve worked for, you’ve done over the course of a decade is for moments like this. And if he’s not able to go, obviously that’s a blow. But you want to do it for guys like that.”

Romo has had treatment the last three days after having an epidural on Monday. Earlier Thursday coach Jason Garrett said the hope was Romo that might practice Friday, but he could still play without practicing. In a conference call with the Philadelphia media, Garrett said Romo has seen the game plan even though he has not been in meetings.

“I still organizationally think we’re still hoping that Tony can play, but Kyle’s getting the bulk of the reps this week,” quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson said. “If we get Tony, that’s a bonus. But if not, then we feel good about where Kyle is.”
