W2W4: Day 3 Cowboys draft

By Calvin Watkins

IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys enter the final day of the draft trying to fill some needs in the secondary and linebacker positions. Trying to find a wide receiver and maybe a running back is a possibility as well.

How many picks Saturday: Eight, 119th overall (fourth round), 158th overall (fifth round), 229th overall (seventh round), 231st overall (seventh round), 238th overall (seventh round), 248th overall (seventh round, compensatory), 251st seventh round, compensatory) and 254th (seventh round, compensatory).

Players available who they might select today: JC Copeland, fullback, LSU; Aaron Murray, quarterback, Georgia; Brandon Coleman, wide receiver Rutgers; Aaron Lynch, defensive end, South Florida; Deandre Coleman, defensive tackle Cal; Howard Jones, linebacker, Shepherd College; Ken Bishop, defensive tackle, Northern Illinois; Andrew Jackson, linebacker, Western Kentucky; Keith McGill, cornerback, Utah; Ahmad Dixon, safety, Baylor; Craig Loston, safety, LSU.

Outlook: The Cowboys swapped their second round pick and traded a third round pick to move up to select Demarcus Lawrence at No. 34 overall. So, the Cowboys answered a need by grabbing a pass rusher. Now, the Cowboys should turn their attention to the secondary. B.W. Webb was inconsistent last season as a reserve cornerback, so getting another one in the late rounds could be interesting. The Cowboys valued some weakside linebackers in this 4-3 scheme and this is where Jackson could fit as a backup. Murray had a pretty good Pro Day, that was viewed by quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson. If he's on the board, the Cowboys might take a chance on him in the fifth or sixth round. It wouldn't be surprising if the Cowboys selected another defensive lineman. Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli isn't afraid to use a rotation, something he did last season and with the uncertain health status of Anthony Spencer (knee) and Henry Melton (knee).
