Cowboys: Golf

GRAPEVINE, Texas – Not only will Tony Romo bypass a chance at this year’s U.S. Open, but the Cowboys’ quarterback will not attempt to qualify for the HP Byron Nelson Championship either.

The Nelson’s pre-qualifier will be played Thursday at Lantana Golf Club. The Nelson will be held at TPC Four Seasons in Las Colinas from May 17-20.

Romo has attempted to qualify for the Nelson for at least the last six years but has not made the field. There has been talk in the past about him receiving a sponsor’s exemption.

Romo was on the golf course Wednesday, however, at the team’s annual sponsors’ tournament at Cowboys Golf Club in Grapevine, Texas. Most of the team's veterans took part in either the morning or afternoon tournaments.

“I get a little concerned if I see somebody out there playing good golf other than Romo,” owner and general manager Jerry Jones joked. “We allow him to be a good golfer.”

IRVING, Texas – Tony Romo will not attempt to qualify for the U.S. Open after all.

Romo said he has elected to skip the May 14 local qualifier at Old American Golf Club in The Colony.

According to the USGA’s Web site, Romo was listed in the upcoming field, but the quarterback said the application to play in the event was not made by him.

Romo has attempted to qualify for the U.S. Open numerous times and reached the sectional qualifying in Houston two years ago. He did not make it out of local qualifying last year.

The Cowboys started the supervised offseason program on Monday, however, Romo and a high percentage of teammates had been working out at Valley Ranch on their own for more than a month.

“The workouts have been great,” Romo said. “The intensity and focus have been great to see.”

Tony Romo will be playing on Sunday after all.

The Dallas Cowboys quarterback and Tiger Woods vaulted all the way up to a tie for 15th in the best-ball team competition Saturday after a 9-under 63, putting them at 19 under overall after three rounds of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Romo’s chances at being around on Sunday looked slim when the duo dropped into a tie for 50th place after Friday’s second round (only the top 25 teams make the cut). But Romo and Woods, who made a charge of his own with a 5-under 67, got off to a quick start with Romo making birdie on No. 10, the team’s first hole of the day.

Woods bogeyed the par-3 12th but finished his front nine with birdies on five of the last six holes. Romo birdied No. 15 and nearly birdied 16, but his chip lipped out. He got unlucky again on No. 17 when his blast from the greenside bunker rolled around the cup and stayed out.

Romo knocked his approach shot close on No. 1 and sank the putt for another birdie and followed that up with birdie on the second. Woods also made birdie on No. 2, and he parred the final eight holes coming home. He is alone in third place at 11 under and trails leader Charlie Wi by four shots heading into the final round.

Romo finished his birdie binge after another shot in tight to the short par-3 seventh hole.

Tony Romo-Tiger Woods tandem fades at Pebble

Tony Romo is used to playing on Sundays. But he probably won't have that chance this weekend.

The Dallas Cowboys quarterback and Tiger Woods slipped into a tie for 50th at 10 under after a second-round 67 in the best-ball team portion of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am on Friday.

Playing on the par-70 Monterey Peninsula course, considered the easiest of the three courses being used this week, Woods and Romo got off to a fast start, with each making birdie on the opening hole. Romo followed that up with another birdie on No. 2, while Woods had to settle for par.

The two early birdies put the Romo-Woods pairing at -9 overall and tied for 19th for the moment, but that momentum wouldn't last.

Woods, who needed 33 putts in his second round, missed three putts inside of 10 feet and also had a couple of lip-outs in a round of 2-under 68 that left him tied for 17th, six strokes back of leader Charlie Wi heading into the weekend.

Woods and Romo will play Saturday’s third round at Pebble Beach and will tee off of No. 10 at 10:22 a.m.

But Romo’s chances of being around for Sunday are slim. Only the top 25 teams advance to the final round.

The pair opened the tournament with a 7-under 65 at Spyglass Hill on Thursday and were tied for 25th.

Tony Romo and Tiger Woods tied for 25th

Talk about a power couple.

Tony Romo is paired with Tiger Woods for the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and the Dallas Cowboys quarterback contributed his fair share of shots in the first round Thursday.

Woods made six birdies and two bogeys for a 4-under 68 and a share of 15th place, five shots off the lead. Romo, who does not get any strokes because he is a scratch golfer, made pars on the two holes Woods bogeyed (Nos. 13 and 4) and birdied the par-5 14th with a little advice from Woods, who helped with the read on the birdie putt.

That put the pair at 7 under as a team in the best-ball format, good for 25th place.

Romo seemed to have a bit of stage fright, which seems strange for a guy used to competing in front of 70,000 screaming fans. Of course, he's not playing golf in front of them, and even a strong player like Romo is going to have some jitters in a setting such as this.

"He's an outstanding player and competitor,'' Romo said. "Anybody who walks along and sees the shots knows he's hitting the ball well. He's got a great shot this week.''

Romo and Woods started their round at Spyglass Hill on No. 10. They will tee off Friday at 11:17 a.m. CT on No. 1 at the Monterey Peninsula course.

Tiger Woods calls Tony Romo 'a hell of a golfer'

Tiger Woods talked about Pebble Beach Pro-Am partner Tony Romo while discussing this weekend's tournament with ESPN's Colleen Dominguez.

Woods said the Cowboys' quarterback has been calling, texting and sending video of his swing.

"He's just so fired up about playing," Woods said of Romo. "He's a hell of a golfer to begin with. He's a scratch golfer. To him this is like a dream come true for him to come out and play in this type of event."

Woods said Romo's goal is to finish on top of the leaderboard.

"He wants to not just make the cut," Woods said. "He wants to win the tournament so he's trying to figure out, 'How many birdies I need to make and blah blah blah.' And I said, 'OK, well, why don't we just both play well at the same time.'"

Woods will play with Romo in the pro-am format that requires each team to play at Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill and Monterrey Peninsula Country Club over the first three rounds. The cut is then made after 54 holes, with all pros and the top amateur teams advancing to the final round Sunday at Pebble Beach.

Tony Romo second at golf tournament

After tying for Saturday's best round, Tony Romo sits in second place through two days of the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship at Lake Tahoe in Stateline, Nev.

The Cowboys' quarterback trails only actor Jack Wagner heading into Sunday's final round.

Romo had four birdies during a second-round 70, which was good for 27 points in the modified Stableford scoring system. Romo has a total of 46 points, six behind Wagner and four ahead of former NFL quarterback Chris Chandler.

It won't be easy for Romo to catch Wagner, the only non-pro athlete to ever win the event. But he'll give it his best shot.

"I'm very competitive whenever I show up to play, whether it's basketball, football, soccer, golf, whatever it is," Romo said, according to The Associated Press.

Wagner and Romo, who tied for second last year, will be paired together Sunday.

Former Dallas Star Mike Modano scored 17 points in the second round for a total of 37, good for ninth place.

Former Cowboy Emmitt Smith isn't faring as well, although he bounced back from a minus-8 in the first round with nine points Saturday. His total of one ties him for 55th in the 85-player field.

McKINNEY, Texas -- Tony Romo and playing partner Mark Walker are in position to win the Adams Golf Pro-Scratch for the second time in three years after an opening round 64 on Monday at TPC Craig Ranch.

Romo and Walker will have a three-shot lead entering Tuesday’s final round. They won the tournament in 2009 when it was played at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club and finished second last year when it was played at Lakewood Country Club.

Romo and Walker had 10 birdies and two bogeys on their round, with Romo closing with a two-putt birdie on the par-5 18th hole.

Three teams are tied at 5-under: Henry Cagigal and Collin Stoops, Rory Smith and Brian Mason and Judd Whiteman and Trip Leon.

The tandem of Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo and pro John Daly lost ground Friday in the second round of the AT&T Pebble beach National Pro-Am.

Romo/Daly shot a 2-under 70 on the Spyglass Hill course and is tied for 83rd place. The team opened Thursday with a 5-under 65 on the Monterey Peninsula course and was tied for 43rd.

The pair's two-round total is 7-under 135, which is 13 strokes behind the leaders, pro Bryce Molder and EMC chairman Harry You. Romo and Daly were seven shots back after the first round.

Romo and Daly will play on the Pebble Beach Golf Links in Saturday's third round.

Romo ties for 2nd at celebrity golf event

Tony Romo spent his last weekend before the Cowboys start training camp playing in the American Century Championship celebrity tournament at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Stateline, Nev.

It was far from the Byron Nelson Championship or the U.S. Open, but Romo made the best of it.

The quarterback wrapped up the three-day event Sunday with his best round of the tournament and finished tied for second place. Former NFL quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver, who pulled away from the field in the second round, cruised to victory with 84 points in the modified Stableford scoring format.

Romo, NFL Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, former major league pitcher John Smoltz and actor Jack Wagner each totaled 65 points. It was Romo's second consecutive runner-up performance at the event.

Romo, who was tied for sixth after the second round, tallied 25 points Sunday, tying him with former Star Brett Hull for the second-best round of the day. Tolliver, who had a tournament-best round of 33 on Saturday, closed with 26 points.

Hull finished with 57 points, good for 11th place. Former Stars teammate Mike Modano came in 17th.

Other athletes from Dallas didn't fare so well. After scoring a solid 16 points the first round, Troy Aikman put up rounds of minus-4 and 4 to drop into a four-way tie for 51st. Steve Beuerlein, Aikman's backup on the Cowboys' 1992 Super Bowl team, was in that group.

The title of best golfing former Cowboys quarterback goes to Vinny Testaverde, who tied for 32nd.

After 0 points in each of the first two rounds, Mavericks guard Jason Kidd broke through with a final round of 4 to claim 63rd place in the field of 82.

A score of 4 might not sound very good until you compare it to the minus-93 for Charles Barkley, who finished last for the fifth straight year.

Tony Romo has yet to win an NFL playoff game, but he has earned a prestigious title: The best amateur golfer among professional athletes.

Romo, who has recently formed a friendship with Tiger Woods, ranks No. 1 in Golf Digest's rankings of athlete-golfers with a handicap of plus-3.3.

Of course, some Cowboys fans won't be pleased with Romo's top ranking. There's a perception that Romo should focus less on golf and more on football, even though he spends more free time at Valley Ranch than any other Cowboys player.
