Jordan Spieth shoots course record at NCAA Regional
By Randy Jennings
As a high school golfer competing against the best in the world, Dallas’ Jordan Spieth turned into a drawing card in the previous two HP Byron Nelson Championships.
Spieth not only survived the 36-hole cut, but moved into weekend contending position, finishing tied for 16th in 2010 and tied for 32nd last year.
Unfortunately, Spieth was unable to play in the Nelson this year because, as a freshman at the University of Texas, he is competing at the NCAA Norman Regional Championship.
On Thursday, Spieth shot a course-record 6-under-par 66 at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla., to lead all individuals and help the Longhorns share the first-day lead with Florida State in team competition. Spieth made seven birdies and one bogey.
