IRVING, Texas -- We've seen from past Nelsons that someone few expect can jump up and surprise the field, taking home the championship trophy. Here's someone you should watch.

Player: Jeff Overton
Why he can win: Overton has two top-5s on the season and appears close to getting that first PGA Tour win. ... Nelson is used to crowning first-time winners, so he fits the bill. Plus, he likes the course with two top-10 finishes the past two years.
Best career Nelson finish: Tied for second in 2010
Best finish in 2012 on PGA Tour: Tied for fourth at Shell Houston Open.

IRVING, Texas -- It's always fun to watch Phil Mickelson attempt to go low here in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The Nelson hasn't seen Mickelson since 2007, but he has returned.

The last time Mickelson won the Nelson was 1996, well before he finally broke through with some major wins and started battling Tiger Woods for the label as the best in the world.

Player: Phil Mickelson
Why he can win: He's Phil, folks. He's capable of shooting a low number whenever he tees it up. And inhis last two Nelsons -- 2005 and 2007 -- he finished tied for 14th (2005) and tied for third (2007). He shot 66-65 on the weekend in 2007 to create a bit of a buzz.
Best Nelson finish: Champion in 1996 (has finished top-3 three times in 13 Nelsons)
Best finish on PGA Tour in 2012: Won AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

IRVING, Texas -- We'll take a look at some players to watch heading into the HP Byron Nelson Championship.

Player: Adam Scott
Why he can win: Scott's already won before at the Nelson and he did it in 2008, the first year the tournament was played after D.A. Weibring renovated the course. If Scott's putter is working, he's dangerous. He comes in with some momentum. In five PGA Tour events, Scott has made five cuts and finished in the top-25 four times.
Best finish at Nelson: 2008 champion
Best finish on PGA Tour in 2012: Tied for eighth at the Masters
