SLC-ex Ross Stripling hurls no-hitter for A&M

Southlake Carroll product Ross Stripling threw the 11th no-hitter in Texas A&M history Saturday, leading the seventh-ranked Aggies to a 1-0 home win over San Diego State.

The senior, who was scheduled to participate in graduation ceremonies Saturday, allowed only a fifth-inning walk while striking out seven. He threw 106 pitches.

Stripling, a ninth-round pick by the Colorado Rockies in the 2011 draft, improves to 9-2 with a 2.36 ERA.

It was A&M's first no-hitter since Zach Jackson's seven-inning gem against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Feb. 14, 2004. Matt Blank had the last nine-inning no-hitter for the Aggies, accomplishing the feat against Texas-Pan American on Feb. 6, 1996.
Frisco Centennial and Dallas Hillcrest have a lot at stake in their area-round matchup.

Centennial drew the short end of the stick last season, facing a strong Highland Park squad in the first round that sent the team packing after one quick game.

Centennial finished 2012 as the second seed in District 9-4A behind Frisco Wakeland and has a playoff win under its belt, but Hillcrest stands in the way of a long-overdue playoff run.

Hillcrest took the District 12-4A crown this season, running the table in one of the area’s weaker districts. However, Hillcrest has playoff experience from a run to the regional quarterfinals last season that took a talented Rockwall-Heath team to the third game in a best-of-3 series.

The winner of this area-round duel will then potentially face Rockwall-Heath in the regional quarterfinal next week.

Highland Park, Wakeland headed for rematch

In one of the more epic wins of the playoffs last season, Frisco Wakeland knocked off Highland Park on a two-run, walk-off homer in the third game of the regional quarterfinals.

Those two are one win away from another meeting in the same round this season.

Highland Park eked past Carrollton Creekview in the bi-district round, 1-0, and has North Dallas in its sights this weekend.

Wakeland found late life against McKinney North, taking the third game of the series 13-0 after two close games to begin the series. It will face Dallas Bryan Adams in the area round.

Class 5A Region I bracket heating up

Before the playoffs began, Arlington Martin head coach Curt Culbertson said the lack of DFW schools deep in the baseball playoffs was due, in part, to Metroplex teams falling to other local teams early in the brackets.

This year is no different.

The bottom of the Region I bracket will see two strong DFW teams fall at the hands of another North Texas team.

District 7-5A champion Southlake Carroll will face District 6-5A runner up Grapevine in area-round action this weekend. Also, District 8-5A runner up Flower Mound and District 5-5A champ Mansfield face off to play the winner of Carroll and Grapevine.

The setup will leave just one Metroplex team with the chance to advance to the bottom region semifinal in Region I.
Rockwall and McKinney faced off twice this softball season in District 10-4A play, with district champion Rockwall winning both times, 3-1 and 8-2.

Just because district play is over doesn’t mean these two are done battling.

Rockwall and McKinney are slated to square off again in the regional quarterfinals of the 2012 UIL softball state playoffs in a best-of-three series at Allen High School.

Rockwall rides a high into the regional quarterfinal after knocking of Frisco Centennial decisively in the bi-district round. Centennial eliminated the Yellowjackets last year in the regional semifinals, Rockwall’s deepest trip into the playoffs under head coach Shadie Acosta.

Rockwall did not return the veteran experience it had last season but has peaked at the right time, taking a few lumps throughout the regular season to prepare for the challenging grind of the playoffs.

“You’re going to have some rough times in the beginning if you have a young team and you have to build that chemistry,” Acosta said. “I think we decided that we were going to make this work. We’ve had many opportunities this season to touch on those things and how important it is to have that common respect for each other on and off the field and how your work ethic will always pay off.”

Two of the highs in Rockwall’s roller-coaster season were wins over McKinney.

While the second score was lopsided in Rockwall’s favor, McKinney proved it could play with the Yellowjackets in the first matchup, leading 1-0 through the sixth inning before Rockwall mounted a three-run rally.

“They have a great pitcher and a few good players so we know that they’re not going to roll over for us," Acosta said. "They are our district rival and one of the better teams in our district so we’re always excited to face off against them.”

Plano and Plano East destined for playoff duel

Over the past two years, high school football fans have dubbed Allen-Euless Trinity playoff matchups as the biggest must-see games this side of the state championship.

In high school softball, the matchup of that caliber is looming just two rounds away.

Plano and Plano East share a district and placement in the ESPNHS Fab 50, with East coming in highest at No. 11.

Plano East took the season series and in turn claimed the district title over second-place Plano.

Before that matchup can happen, the two Plano schools will have to face their most challenging opponents to date in the regional quarterfinals.

Plano East will face the third-place finisher from its district, Flower Mound, in the regional quarterfinals this weekend.

In an interesting twist, Flower Mound handed Plano East its only two district losses of the season.

Plano faces Hebron, which finished fourth in District 8-5A but knocked off District 7-5A champion Keller and 6-5A runner-up Hurst L.D. Bell in the first two rounds of the playoffs.

Plano went the distance in its three-game area-round series before dispatching Mansfield Legacy, making nothing certain against a hot Hebron squad.

IRVING, Texas -- The way Donnie Brake remembers it, the field was "partial grass, dirt and rocks."

It was about 20 yards wide and 38 yards long, give or take. When the offense wanted to work on the passing game, they went the long way. When they wanted to run, they went the wide way.

James Hanna was a 16-year-old sophomore then, playing six-man football at Coram Deo Academy in Highland Village, Texas, with Brake as his coach.

"I remember practicing outside of our building on really not very good fields over there," Hanna said, "and thinking about going to play football for Oklahoma and then I'd go play for the Dallas Cowboys because my stepdad went to Oklahoma and has been a Cowboy fan, so I grew up watching Oklahoma and the Cowboys. As luck would have it, it's worked out that way. Literally, it's a dream come true."

How many kids have those dreams? Hundreds? Thousands?

Hanna, whom the Cowboys selected in the sixth round in last week's NFL draft, is one of the few who get to live it.

Dallas Woodrow Wilson big man Zach Coleman officially selected Missouri as his destination for the fall of 2013.

The 6-foot-8 senior said the Tigers' move to the SEC played a big role in his decision.

"I like the style of play," Coleman said via text Monday. "I have a great relationship with the staff, and they are making the move to the SEC. A player like myself would thrive in that conference."

Coleman's coach, Patrick Washington, said Missouri recruited Coleman very well, making what can be a stressful process kind of fun.

"I think he enjoyed having those guys recruit him," Washington said. "They showed him how he would fit into what they were trying to do, especially with them going into the SEC. It should be a great situation for him."

To Washington, Coleman's commitment proved the power forward's dedication to his school work even more than his success on the hardwood.

Coleman averaged 14 points and 13 rebounds during his junior season, helping the Wildcats win the 12-4A championship en route to a regional quarterfinal appearance.
Arlington MartinTravis L. Brown for ESPN.comIt's been a while since Arlington Martin won a state baseball championship, and no North Texas team has won one since 2008.

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Typically, a district baseball championship is won on the arm of a dominant pitching ace or the hot bat of a great hitter.

That’s not the case with District 4-5A champion and ESPNHS Fab 50 No. 12 Arlington Martin.

The Warriors have five batters hitting over the .400 mark and have split their wins among eight different pitchers.

“This team is not a team that has a superstar,” Martin coach Curt Culbertson said. “That’s what makes this team the type of good and competitive team it is. It’s a team that competes and that doesn’t quit. They just go.”

The senior-heavy Martin pitching staff came into the season with a chip on its shoulder after a below-par year last season and has created a kind of fight that's resonated throughout the team, Culbertson said.

The proof is in the Warriors’ 13 come-from-behind wins out of their 27 victories.

At the plate, Martin is no underdog.

At the team’s home field, players muscle hits into a fierce south wind that knocks down fly balls. Instead of that being a drawback, Culbertson believes it can have a positive psychological effect on his players when they find themselves in a stadium with the wind at their back.

They might get a taste of that this weekend out on the West Texas plains, taking on Odessa in the bi-district round at Abilene's Hardin-Simmons University.

Beyond the first round lies a tough region that includes the likes of Mansfield, Colleyville Heritage, Plano and Southlake Carroll.

But it’s the South Texas teams that have dominated in the state tournament the past decade.

Corpus Christi Carroll’s Class 5A championship last season continued a streak that began in 2002 of schools from the Corpus Christi or Houston area bringing home a state title in either 4A or 5A. This season, both Corpus Christi Carroll and Calallen enter the playoffs in the top 11 of the Fab 50 and are poised to continue the streak.

A Dallas-area team has not won a 4A or 5A state championship in baseball since Plano West’s 5A victory over Southlake Carroll in 2008.

Culbertson said it’s tough for the North Texas teams that cancel each other out in the early rounds of the playoffs, but the team that separates itself as the best DFW has to offer sure has a good chance of breaking the Metroplex skid.

“All these guys around here believe some of the best baseball is here in North Texas. Once we get [deep in the playoffs], we’ll deal with that out there,” Culbertson said.
Highland Park's name covers the tennis results from this week's 4A state tournament in Austin, including gold in mixed doubles by the Scots' Connor LaFavre and Margo Taylor.

The pair took down Jared Fellows and Briana Fellows from Boerne Champion 6-1, 6-1 to claim the title.

Two other doubles teams from Highland Park took silver: Sarah Cannon and Alin Piranian in girls and Luke Stainback and Hunter Holman in boys. Both lost to pairs from Austin Lake Travis.

Lacy Blake and Maddie Schorlemmer of Argyle won gold in 3A girls doubles and the pair of Ryan Ford and Anisha Sriastava of Lucas Lovejoy took silver in 3A mixed doubles.
The Allen girls golf team brought home the gold, finishing a full 11 strokes ahead of second place The Woodlands.

Allen golfer Maddie Szeryk finished second in the individual ranks, with scores of 67 and 70 over the two-day tournament that wrapped up Tuesday in Austin, one shot behind Austin Westlake's Sierra Sims.

In the 4A boys tournament, Highland Park's Scottie Scheffler finished on top of the individual results, shooting a 68 and 72. His team finished second behind Austin Lake Travis.

Trophy Club Byron Nelson's boys team finished fourth in the 4A tournament with a score of 607 and a playoff loss to Montgomery.

Byron Nelson's girls team took home silver with a two-day score of 625, three strokes behind Montgomery Purple.

Mansfield's boys finished fourth in the 5A tournament with a score of 591.

Who do you think you are: Julius Randle

Julius Randle and Billy OwensKelly Kline and AP Photo/Duane BurlesonWe compare class of 2013 power forward Julius Randle, left, to Billy Owens, former NBA and Syracuse forward from Carlisle High School (Pa.), class of 1988.

This summer, ESPNHS will sit down with some of the nation's elite players to break down their game, talk about the inevitable comparisons to college and pro players and get their take on who they pattern their game after.

Player: Julius Randle
School: Prestonwood Christian (Plano, Texas)
Position: Power forward
Height/weight: 6-9/225
ESPN 60: No. 2

Who is Julius Randle?

The left-handed combo forward has been one of the top players nationally in the 2013 class since middle school. Randle delivers as a high school player, leading Prestonwood to consecutive Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools Class 5A state crowns. As a junior, he put his school in the national spotlight by leading the team to the title at the prestigious City of Palms Classic, where he earned MVP honors. For the season, the second team ESPNHS All-American averaged 21.1 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists a game while shooting 65.2 percent from the floor. Next season, Randle will have a good shot to become Texas' first Mr. Basketball USA selection since Rashard Lewis of Elsik (Houston) in 1998.

Scouting report

According to ESPN RecruitingNation, Randle is a pro in the making. He can drive going in either direction, has touch around the rim, but can also powerfully finish with contact. Randle has range, but is prone to being streaky from the outside. In a nutshell, he can dominate smaller players inside and is too athletic for post players to handle. When he is on, like he was during stretches of the 2011 Nike EYBL, Randle has the look of a top 10 to 15 prospect of the past decade.

Most frequent comparisons: Marvin Williams, Caron Butler, Billy Owens

ESPNHS comparison: Billy Owens

There are great similarities between Randle and the former Syracuse and Carlisle (Pa.) All-American who spent 10 years in the NBA. Owens, also proficient with his left-hand, was a top 5 prospect in 1988 and led his high school team to multiple state championships. Owens was powerfully built and a huge matchup problem on the high school and college level. He wasn't nearly as powerful as Randle, but high school players 25 years ago didn't have NBA-ready bodies nearly as often as they do today. What Owens did possess was an overall feel for the game that made teammates better and passing abilities that are rare for a 6-foot-8 player. Randle won't necessarily pick up those same traits if he doesn't already have them, but if he can learn to stay locked-in for a complete game instead of stretches, the sky is the limit.

Julius' comparison: LeBron James

Since Billy Owens was in his prime before Randle was born, naturally he doesn't really know anything about Carlisle's most famous athlete next to Jim Thorpe. Ever the student, Randle said he's "going to look him up to see what he's about."

Randle is a classic inside-out player who national scouts love because of his ability as an offensive threat across the entire floor, so he found it difficult to compare himself to one player. He does, however, have an affinity for the current Miami Heat star.

"I don't know if I can compare my game to just one player because I think I'm a mixture of players," Randle said. "On the perimeter, I use my speed, strength and handle sort of like LeBron to get where I want on the floor. I'm also able to make plays for my teammates."

Randle knows where his "money" is, too.

"In the post, I have moves also, so I would say I'm sort of like Amar'e Stoudemire or Zach Randolph, but more explosive."

The Prestonwood Christian standout is working hard to expand his game and incorporate some of the moves of his favorite player -- Kobe Bryant.

"Right now, I'm working on being a better defender and also my in-between game like pull-ups. So I watch a lot of Melo (Carmelo Anthony) and also my favorite player Kobe to see how they create space."

High school baseball games average a much smaller fan attendance than those of other programs. Many games would be hard pressed to draw over 100 people.

This season, Fort Worth Christian has been guaranteed to draw anywhere from a handful to 67 spectators for their baseball games, all with radar guns in tow.

That’s right, 67 scouts lined the bleachers to get a report on pitcher Teddy Stankiewicz, coach Tracy Howard said.

The timing of the game was perfect to draw in that number of scouts. It was a week before any UIL schools could begin tournament play and it took place during a tournament hosted by Fort Worth Christian that featured many of the top private schools in the state.

But those 67 scouts were mostly there to check out the Cardinals ace.

Going into the regional final round of the TAPPS 4A state playoffs, Stankiewicz has a 10-2 record with 121 strikeouts and a 1.33 ERA in 79 innings. He is also No. 51 on the ESPNHS 100 top recruits in the nation -- the highest ranking of any player in the Metroplex.

Stankiewicz, an Arkansas signee, averages 90-92 mph on his fastball but has topped out at 95 with good control.

“Teddy is the type of guy that looks effortless when he throws,” Howard said. “He looks very smooth, but he has the ability to throw it by guys. He’s pretty fun to watch.”

Before his senior year, Stankiewicz participated in two Under Armor All-American games -- one at Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs.

“He’s been invited to some pretty big-time events and he’s done well,” Howard said. “He’s done a good job of getting himself recognized, but he’s also done a good job of competing once he’s there.”

The only question that remains in Stankiewicz’s game is if he’ll be playing SEC or MLB ball next fall.

Frisco Wakeland riding district momentum

Wakeland could be another team to beat in the playoffs. It is coming off a deep playoff run last year that ended at the hands of state semifinalist Mesquite Poteet.

Wakeland is on a 13-district game winning streak heading into bi-district play this weekend. It finished on top of District 9-4A with a 13-1 district record, and its only district loss of the season was the first game of district play to Frisco.

Colleyville Heritage jumps into Fab 50

Heritage jumped into the No. 47 spot this weekend thanks to winning 19 of its last 20 games to claim the District 6-5A crown.

Arlington Martin made a huge jump, moving from No. 33 to No. 12 in the national poll.
