A struggling Denton program snapped a 24-game district losing streak in dramatic fashion last week, rallying to beat Little Elm, 16-15.
A late gamble paid off for the Broncos (3-3, 1-1 in District 4-4A) in the win. After quarterback Dentton Hudspeth threw a 62-yard pass to Matthew Perry to put Denton a point behind with just 32 seconds left, head coach Randy Patzkowski elected to go for two and the win.
Hudspeth converted a pass to Ruperto Gutierrez to give Denton the lead and its first district win since beating Denton Guyer in 2006.
Opening a new school can hurt the athletics program of an older school. That’s been the case with Denton, which has struggled mightily since the opening of Guyer in 2005.
Denton won just two games from 2007-09, but seems to be improving in 2010 having tallied wins over Little Elm, Fort Worth Brewer and Carrollton R.L. Turner. It lost nail-biters to Dallas Woodrow Wilson and Wichita Falls.
