Just past the halfway point in the District 15-4A football schedule, we have the makings of a cavalry charge to the finish line.
Behind 15-4A leader Lancaster and second-place West Mesquite are five teams with two losses. That’s seven teams playing for four playoff spots.
The season’s final four weeks should be interesting.
Lancaster (6-0, 4-0 in 15-4A) should feel good about its position, especially since the Tigers were a preseason choice to finish sixth in the nine-team district. But Lancaster cannot afford to celebrate yet. Its final four games are against teams currently with two losses: Mesquite Poteet, Waxahachie, Terrell and Red Oak.
The only loss for West Mesquite (5-1, 3-1) came at the hands of Lancaster. The Wranglers play at Waxahachie this week and at Red Oak in two weeks. They also have home games against Terrell and Forney.
Corsicana and Poteet are tied for third at 3-2 in district and still have a bye remaining.
Corsicana (4-3 overall) has a favorable schedule: road games at Terrell and Forney sandwiched around a home game against Red Oak.
Poteet (5-2), picked last in a preseason poll, hosts Lancaster this week, plays at last-place Ennis and after a bye finishes at home against Waxahachie.
Red Oak, Terrell and Waxahachie are 2-2, tied for fifth, and have four district games remaining each.
Red Oak (4-2) has the most difficult schedule. After hosting Forney on Friday, the Hawks play at Corsicana followed by a home game against West Mesquite and the finale at Lancaster.
The remaining schedule for Terrell (4-2) is also challenging: home to Corsicana this week, at West Mesquite, home to Lancaster and at Ennis on the final week.
Waxahachie (3-3) begins the stretch run by hosting West Mesquite on Friday, followed by Lancaster on the road and home games against Ennis and at Poteet.
A team finishing with a 6-2 district record should feel very good about its chances of advancing to the playoffs. A third district defeat could make the playoffs problematic.
