Burleson boys on pace to reach goals

At the halfway mark in District 3-5A, the Burleson Elk are on pace to reach their goals and maybe more.

Last year's Burleson team was the first to make the playoffs in 13 years.

"Hopefully this year we'll be in line to be the first team to repeat," head coach Ted Tomchesson said.

Burleson (19-7, 5-1 in District 3-5A) has won two games in a row and five of six overall, and the Elk haven't lost two in a row all year after a 9-0 start to the season. They sit in second place behind tough North Crowley and in front of third-place Haltom.

"We're pleased with our start," Tomchesson said. "We're having to replace about seven seniors from last year's team and four starters."

Returning forward Ryan Marsh, a 6-foot-7 senior, is playing well for the Elk. Blake Dunson has been averaging around 16 points per game in district play, and Joel Rodgers has been key on the defensive end for Burleson.

"We've definitely put ourselves in a good position, but I don't want the kids to be satisfied with that," Tomchesson said. "We've set a goal for ourselves not just to make the playoffs, but we want to put ourselves in a good seeding for the playoffs. So far, we've put ourselves in position to achieve that goal.

"Now we've got to duplicate what we did in the first round."
