For an undefeated team that had barely been tested this season, losing was an unimaginable outcome.

But that's what happened. Bastrop and its high-octane offense simply outpaced a run-based Liberty team to capture a 38-24 win Friday at Cowboys Stadium in the Class 4A Division II regional semifinals.

Bastrop (10-3) advances to play the winner between Highland Park and Mesquite Poteet.

"When it comes to the third round of the playoffs, it's who's going to make one or two more plays and make one or two less mistakes," Frisco Liberty head coach Galen Zimmerman said. "I felt like they just made a couple more plays than we did. Their big plays hurt us."

Bastrop quarterback Josiah Monroe continued his stellar postseason run with another electrifying game against Liberty (12-1). He finished with 305 passing yards and 123 on the ground, totaling four touchdowns.

His favorite target, receiver Mason Foytik, had 212 yards on 11 receptions and a touchdown.

With Bastrop racing out to a 21-10 halftime lead despite a strong first-half performance from running back Jay Ajayi, Liberty came out passing the ball in the second half in an attempt to catch up.

"They were doing a good job of just loading up the box," Zimmerman said. "We wanted to be a little more balanced and get on the perimeter. We tried to take what they gave us."

It worked early. Quarterback Zach Smith hit Malcolm Hill on a 44-yard touchdown pass on Liberty's first drive, and defensive back David Smith's 63-yard interception return for a touchdown cut Bastrop's lead to 28-24 late in the third quarter.

But after a Bastrop field goal put the Bears up by 7 midway through the fourth quarter, Liberty's bid to tie the score fell short because of a sack and consecutive incompletions in Bastrop territory.

After the turnover on downs, Monroe put the game away with a 16-yard touchdown run with 1:57 left in the game.

"I felt like we were in it all the way up until their last touchdown," Zimmerman said.

Ajayi, a Boise State commit, finished with 191 yards and a touchdown, but he got just five carries in the second half as Liberty tried to catch Bastop off guard after the Bears spent the entire first half keying on the senior.

Smith and the passing game played respectably for a unit that saw limited action during the regular season as Liberty rode Ajayi's back to an undefeated regular season. Smith finished 12-for-18 for 130 yards.

"We've been fairly efficient [in the passing game] all year," Zimmerman said. "That's what we tried to do tonight -- be as efficient as possible throwing the ball to loosen them up a little bit. Obviously, we try to run it when we can, but we made a couple mistakes. They're too good a defense to try and throw the ball all the time."
