EULESS, Texas – Tuesday’s girls basketball game between Class 5A No. 9 Euless Trinity and Richland turned into a race to see who could score more points.

But that race wasn't between the Trojans and the Rebels. It ended up being between Trinity guards Shay Weaver and Nikki Moody as the Trojans took down Richland, 78-46.

Moody finished on top with 27 points, one ahead of the sharp-shooting Weaver. Weaver’s total included four 3-pointers.

“Shay works really hard on defense and is a very good 3-point shooter,” Trinity head coach Sue Cannon said. “She’s committed to Marshall and we are going to really miss her.”

Trinity’s ability to put so many points up on the board was due in part to the ability of the defense to force turnovers. Despite the blowout, Cannon said the team still has some work to do in decision making.

“I thought we did a good job from getting steals off of our press," she said. "I thought we took some very poor shots off of that, but overall I’m pleased with the win.”

Boys: Richland 68, Trinity 56

What was a close score for much of the game turned into a blowout as Richland put away Trinity for the second time this season Tuesday.

Richland, which remained unbeaten in District 6-5A play, stormed past the Trojans in their first meeting this season by 32 points.

“At times we showed we could have really pushed this lead out and got a little lackadaisical,” Richland coach Richard Bacon said. “It’s kind of hard sometimes when you win by as many points as we won the first time to come back and keep that same level of intensity.”

Richland’s Justin Hammonds led the Rebels with 15 points, and Trinity’s Joe Ebondo scored a game-high 17.
