Chasteen's 500th win puts Coppell close to title

Coppell boys basketball coach Brad Chasteen said a side benefit for reaching the 500-win mark Tuesday night was accepting congratulations from so many who have been a part of his 23-year career.

“It has been great to hear from former players, coaches and well wishers that I love and care about,’’ Chasteen said.

“I guess my testament to coaching is my wife and three of my children are coaches.'’

The 53-year-old (now 500-269) began his varsity coaching career at South Grand Prairie in 1988. He's been at Coppell since 1996. Including time as an assistant, his career spans 31 seasons.

Win No. 500 lacked drama. Coppell, on the road, defeated Keller Central in rather routine fashion, 74-63.

Players were unaware of the significance, but a group of Coppell parents went to the locker room area with a sign after the game for photos and a celebration.

Chasteen said he is hoping for an even bigger celebration, this one involving cutting down the nets, Thursday when Coppell (24-6, 10-1 in District 7-5A) hosts Keller. A win would clinch at least a share of the District 7-5A title for the Cowboys.
