Both golf and tennis state tournaments began Monday and run through the week, with several area teams and athletes making the trip for a title.
In golf, Southlake Carroll, Mansfield and McKinney Boyd sent boys teams to the 5A state meet at Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin. Mansfield's Kolton Crawford was the Region I meet winner.
Dallas Jesuit's Jordan Spieth and Justin Northwest's Henry Todd qualified for the tournament as medalists. Spieth, who played in last year's Byron Nelson, was the Region II meet winner.
In 4A boys, Aledo, Highland Park and Rockwall make the trip to Austin for team play. Rockwall's Trey Manis was the Region II meet winner. Trophy Club Byron Nelson's Major Monzingo, the Region I meet winner, and Richardson J.J. Pearce's Cade Storey qualified as medalists.
Region I meet winner Maddie Szeryk and her Allen Eagles are the lone girls 5A team going to the state meet, but Maggie Neece of Colleyville Heritage and Shelby Wilson of Hebron qualified as medalists.
Three teams in girls 4A qualified for the state meet, Trophy Club Byron Nelson, Carrolton Creekview and Highland Park. Maty Monzingo of Byron Nelson was the Region I meet winner and April McCoy of Creekview was the Region II winner. Mansfield Summit's Julia Bazaldua, Dallas Woodrow Wilson's Grace Choi and Carrollton Newman Smith's Eji Kwon qualified as medalists.
