Coaches debut in Lancaster-Carter opener

7:30 p.m. Friday at Kincaide Stadium

When we saw them last: Lancaster was knocked out of the Class 4A Division I playoffs in the first round by Pflugerville Connally, 27-24. Carter’s playoff exit came in the DI area round at the hands of Carrollton Newman Smith.

2010 result: Lancaster’s defense limited Carter to 145 total yards in a 20-0 victory in last year’s opener.

What’s at stake: The schools share a boundary line and many of the players know each other well. Bragging rights are important. Both programs are under the direction of new head coaches (Chris Gilbert, Lancaster; Scott Jackson, Carter) who would like to get off on the right foot.

Key matchup: After last year’s goose egg, Carter needs to find a running game to keep its defense off the field on what will likely be a hot night.

Players to watch: Lancaster's versatile Nick Harvey was named the District 15-4A top newcomer as a freshman last season for his play at defensive back and quarterback. The ball-carrying load for Carter appears to be falling on Jordan Griffin.

Prediction: Three touchdowns could win this one: Lancaster 19, Carter 13.
