A dramatic improvement in its running game has Little Elm poised to make a run at a playoff berth after the Lobos missed out on the postseason last year.

Quarterback Devante’ Pullum (636 yards, nine touchdowns) and running backs Matt Marrs (721 yards, six touchdowns) and Keaun Kinner (709 yards, 11 touchdowns), all starters from a year ago, are on pace to dwarf their 2010 rushing stats.

Coach Donald Stowers cited the returning experience in the backfield and a stronger offensive line led by Jerome Daniels as reasons for the running game’s improvement.

“We’re running the football extremely well right now,” Stowers said. “That’s always been my philosophy as a coach to have a strong running game. The whole line is a really tight-knit group. They are the leaders of our team.”

The Lobos (5-1, 2-0 in 4-4A) are in first place in District 4-4A along with top-ranked Denton Ryan (5-0, 1-0) after a furious comeback in a win over Wichita Falls Rider (4-2, 1-1) two weeks ago.

With Rider leading by 14 points in the fourth quarter, the Lobos tied the game with a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Kinner and a 3-yard touchdown run by Marrs before prevailing in overtime, 51-44.

“It was a big victory for us because it’s a district win,” Stowers said. “With them being a team that has had experience in the playoffs and finished second last year in our district, obviously it was a big victory for us.”

Little Elm followed that win with a convincing 31-17 victory over The Colony that suddenly puts the Lobos in the race for not only a playoff spot, but a district title. The Lobos close the year at home against Ryan.

Little Elm plays at Denton (1-4, 0-1) on Friday.
