Cedar Hill's No. 1 ranking in the TABC state basketball poll will be on the line this weekend when it hosts the 11th annual C.W. Jackson Cedar Hill Lions Club Tournament sponsored by Babe's Chicken Dinner House.
Teams from El Paso, Houston and Alvin are included in the 16-team field along with some of the area's best, including Mesquite, Plano West and Coppell. The three-day tournament begins Thursday morning and ends Saturday afternoon. All games will be played at the school, located at No. 1 Longhorn Boulevard.
"We like having the teams from outside the area so we're not playing the same teams,'' Cedar Hill coach David Milson said.
Cedar Hill (7-1), the Class 5A state runner-up last season, is the defending tournament champion. Tanner Milson, a 6-1 senior guard, and 6-6 junior center Thomas Gipson are the team's leading scorers. The Longhorns play Dallas W.T. White at 8 p.m. Thursday in the final game on opening day.
The remainder of Thursday's schedule: Arlington Martin vs. El Paso Franklin, 9:30 a.m.; Plano West vs. West Mesquite, 11 a.m.; Ennis vs. Coppell, 12:30 p.m.; Mesquite vs. Houston Clear Springs, 2 p.m.; Plano East vs. Arlington Sam Houston, 3:30 p.m.; Garland vs. Waxahachie, 5 p.m.; El Paso Andress vs. Alvin, 6:30 p.m.
Friday's second-round games in the championship bracket are scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. with the semifinals following at 5 and 8 p.m.
Saturday's championship game begins at 3:30 p.m.
So far this season, Cedar Hill is 7-0 against Texas teams. Its only loss was to Little Rock (Ark.) Parkview, 57-56, in the Fort Worth Coca-Cola Tournament last month.
