Berkner basketball coach suspended for year
By Travis L. Brown
Richardson Berkner boys basketball coach Rod Wright was suspended for the remainder of the season and was put on a two-year probation by the UIL State Executive Committee on Wednesday for violation of the UIL Constitution and Contest rules Sections 51(a)(6) and (10) and 1209 (f)(1).
Section 51 (a) (6) is a violation of district personnel "failing to report known violations in a timely manner or withholding information." The section goes on to say in (10) that it is a violation for district personnel to fail "to comply with the amateur rule, the awards rules, the gifts/awards to coaches rule, the rebate rule, or the coaches employment and source of pay rule."
Section 2109 (f)(1) in the athletics portion of the document states, "School coaches shall not coach 7-12 grade students from their own attendance zone on a non-school team or in a non-school camp or clinic, with the exception of their own adopted or birth children."
Wright will be unable to coach in the UIL until Aug. 22, 2012, according to the UIL.
Richardson ISD athletics director Bob Dubey, Berkner athletics director Jim Ledford and Berkner principal Ron Griffen were all unavailable for comment.
Berkner is No. 7 in the latest ESPNDallas.com Class 5A area rankings.
