WYLIE, Texas -- The Garland girls basketball team capitalized on the opportunities its defense provided to take down Richardson Berkner, 58-39, in the a 5A bi-district playoff.

The Lady Owls' defense created turnover after turnover, which Garland (24-8) was able to turn into fast-break points throughout the game.

“It’s something we try and do on a daily basis is work on getting easy baskets,” Garland coach Pamela Owens said. “We just try and put a lot of pressure and try to disrupt as much as we can because defense leads to offense.”

Garland held around a 10-point lead throughout the majority of the game, but created a 15-3 run to begin the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

Bridget Robinson led her Garland in scoring with 18 points, followed by Gabrielle Wilkins with 15, almost all of which came off transition layups.

Berkner (20-10) guard Jaileen Thomas netted a game-high 22, despite her team’s losing effort.

Garland will have its hands full in the area round, facing No. 4 DeSoto later this week.

“We’re going to go in there and just play hard and see what happens,” Owens said. “They have a great team and we have a great team and I’m just excited to be able to play in the next round.”
