Coppell QB Larson debuts vs. Mesquite Horn
By Jeff Andrews
No. 7 COPPELL at No. 9 MESQUITE HORN
7:30 p.m. Friday at Hanby Stadium
When we saw them last: Coppell’s 2010 season ended in a heartbreaking 41-40 loss to Euless Trinity in the region finals, ending a fantastic run by the Cowboys, who lost just the one game last year. After winning three playoff games, Horn lost to district rival Longview, 28-14, its second loss at the hands of the Lobos.
2010 result: Coppell beat Horn, 13-0, in a game that very much looked like a Zero Week game. Neither team showed the precision that fueled their playoff runs.
What’s at stake: Both teams could use a good start to 2011 as both play in highly competitive districts and face difficult nondistrict schedules. Losing early could translate into losing often.
Key matchup: Horn’s offensive line vs. Coppell’s defensive line. Horn has most of its front coming back while Coppell has a very talented and deep group up front defensively, led by DE William Udeh and DT Austin Buss.
Players to watch: Two former backups take over at QB. Senior Jake Larson has the tall task of replacing Joe Minden at Coppell, while sophomore Destri White could be embarking on a memorable career at Horn.
Prediction: Coppell 21, Mesquite Horn 13.
