Volleyball: Allen faces tough district competition

By Brittany Levine

It should be an exciting season for the Allen Eagles as they compete in a tough District 8-5A.

The team will be led by experienced seniors Ashley Hooper and Tori Bates. Hooper, a 6-footer who has committed to Tulsa, was the most improved player for Allen last season. The 6-foot-1 Bates will play for Stephen F. Austin next fall.

Allen's biggest threat may come from Hebron and Plano Senior High, which both have gotten off to strong starts this season.

"Our district is one of the toughest," said head coach Kelley Gregoriew. "And it will be a battle until the end."

Coppell's goal is to win difficult 7-5A

The competition for District 7-5A looks like it will be a fight to the finish. However, with a number of high-caliber players, Coppell is looking to stay in the running.

"District 7-5A is tough," head coach Julie Green said. "But we have set a goal to win the district."

The Cowgirls have started off the season well. In August, they came in first place at the Texas Open and finished third at the Duncanville Tournament.

Green named Kierra Holst, Chiaka Ogbogu, Erica Bohannon, Bear Bass and Cassidy Pickrell as impact players to watch.

McKinney trying to keep focus throughout season

McKinney is another team with a number of talented players.

Lionettes to keep an eye on include sophomores Erin Hoppe and Marie O’Dell, junior Karmen Jackson and senior Maddy Mead.

Head coach Ramona Wible believes her team needs to remain focused throughout the season, a struggle she says they are constantly working on.

Wible and her team will need to do just that if they are going to have a chance against District 10-4A rivals Richardson Pearce, Rockwall Heath and Highland Park.

"Besides that, I think everyone else is pretty equal and it is anyone's game," Wible said. "To be successful this year the team has to come out strong, maintain control and play a fast-pace game."
